Downtown Kalamazoo Michigan
What is DKI?

Downtown Kalamazoo Incorporated (DKI) is a private, non-profit organization. In conjunction with its affiliate organizations (see below), it manages a full range of activities to benefit downtown Kalamazoo.

Our Vision
Create a dynamic and vibrant, 24-hour downtown that ensures an economic
environment which is attractive to residents, businesses, consumers and
visitors alike, both now and in the future.

Our Mission
Act as a private, nonprofit corporation that works with both the public and
private sectors in preserving and enhancing the economic health of
Kalamazoo's downtown area and, in turn, the Kalamazoo community.

  • Helps to recruit new businesses to downtown.
  • Plans and designs public spaces for the community to enjoy (new Arcadia Creek Festival Place and the North Kalamazoo Mall landscaping project).
  • Promotes downtown through advertising, community events (Great Winter Adventure), and retail promotion events (Summer Sidewalk Sales).
  • Manages the downtown parking system.
  • Partners with the City of Kalamazoo to manage Project Downtown, a ten-point redevelopment plan which features projects such as the introduction of traffic on the Kalamazoo Mall, the East Gateway, the Wayfinding signage system, and two way traffic.
  • Gives away grants to property owners to fix up their buildings.
  • Provides financial incentives for the recruitment of new businesses to downtown.
DKI is the umbrella under which several other organizations reside:
  • Downtown Development Authority — a public body existing by City charter and state enabled. Levies two mill taxes on downtown properties and collects taxes from the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) district. Revenues go right back into downtown services. This group manages the parking system and provides the resources for downtown marketing, business recruitment, and bricks and mortar projects.
  • Downtown Tomorrow Incorporated — a private non-profit body that serves as the real estate development and fundraising arm. It owns several properties in downtown Kalamazoo.
  • DKA Charities — a private non-profit body that focuses on raising funds and putting on great community events such as Great Winter Adventure, Safe Halloween, KidsFest, and Mixer on the Mall.
DKI is made up of six full-time and two part-time staff members. Volunteers serve as directors for the above organizations' boards.
