The Work of Edison Weed and Seed
The Edison Weed and Seed Program (EWSP) is dedicated to weeding out crime and seeding in revitalization of our Edison community.
Weed and Seed recognizes the essential links between law enforcement, the people who live and work in the neighborhood, and the programs and resources of organizations: public and private, local, state, and Federal. The Weed and Seed offices are located at 1356 Portage Street in the Edison Place building.
One of the seven specific goals of EWSP is to create a family-oriented retail shopping district that draws shoppers from all over the city. To support new Portage Street business Family Dollar and deter crime in and around the store, EWSP volunteers recently handed out crime prevention materials to store customers. Residents of the Washington Square Senior Apartments were among the volunteers. They explained to customers how to fill out "hot spot" crime reporting sheets, and distributed information about neighborhood blockwatch and silent observer programs. McGruff, the "Take a bite out of Crime" Dog, was also on hand, posing for pictures with over 20 kids.
Another goal of EWSP is to eliminate trash in order to improve the appearance and safety of Portage Street and its surrounding neighborhoods. In November, the EWSP Neighborhood Restoration Team began the first of several clean-up projects. Resident supervisors joined KPEP volunteers to pick up trash, brush, and debris from alleys in the neighborhood. Future clean-up efforts will include areas within our business district as we continue to work towards a welcoming environment for Portage Street customers.
EWSP has formed a Neighborhood Enforcement and Assistance Team (NEAT) to contribute to crime reduction in the district. Team members make visits to Edison "hot spots" where residents have reported crime or other concerns. In addition, NEAT is available to Edison businesses and residents seeking information and resources related to area concerns.
